Group of various types of stars, that all show distinct changes in brightness. A star might show spontaneous changes of brightness when it is unstable, is expanding or retracting. Such fluctuations in brightness can be regular or irregular. Similar effects occur when, in a binary star system, one star passes in front of the other.
